Many reformed churches have the following traditional reformed clause in their church orders: 'church assemblies shall transact ecclesiastical matters only and in an ecclesiastical manner'. Although this principle had, for the first time, been accepted as far back as the 16th century, vast differences in the interpretation still exist.
