Abstract

This article deals with the pastoral problem of self-love as a destructive force within the individual himself as well as in interpersonal relations. The biblical concept of self-love is investigated in order to formulate an answer to the humanistic idea of self-love as an authoritative instruction. The investigation of these data indicates that self-love implies a limited criterion for the justification of neighbourly love. The main focus and purpose of self-love should be its instrumentality in promoting proper neighbourly love. In conclusion, guidelines are suggested for the pastoral implementation of self-love (either in the called pastor or in the pastoral object itself).
