Globalisation: The new spirit of the 21st century?
In a related article it was indicated that “development” was the buzz word during the past fifty years of the previous century. The ideal of development was not totally rejected at the beginning of this century, but it was regarded as the expected result of “globalisation”, the new magic word of our time. This article is an attempt to get a theoretical grip on globalisation by paying attention to the following: a brief, preliminary description of the phenomenon; a few of its characteristics; an indication of some of its consequences; a more in-depth analysis of the neocapitalist economy as a driving force behind globalisation and, in conclusion, some ideas as to how, from a Christian perspective, globalisation should be viewed.
