Abstract

Preaching that transforms – perspectives from Practical Theology
In this article the issues of preaching and transformation are investigated. The aspects of mind, attitude and conduct are focused on as three areas for transformation by means of preaching. As background and at a basis-theoretical level applicable parts from Scripture are scrutinised more closely. The importance of the following aspects is also highlighted: the embedded and biblical meanings attached to preaching and transformation; the implications of a change of mind, attitude and conduct. At the meta-theoretical level attention is directed to the influence of contemporary cultural patterns and the importance of language utilisation in preaching. In this regard the application of metaphors is touched on. From the viewpoint of psychology as discipline the focus is directed to human personality and transformation, as well as to psychological trends in a process of change. The aspect of identification between preacher and hearers as a requirement for transformation is also addressed. Finally a few practice- theoretical viewpoints are stated.
